About Agility

Bulla Agility Dogs Inc

BAD was incorporated in 2009 and is located at Dogs Victoria, Bulla Exhibition Centre, Bulla in Melbourne’s outer north. Bulla Agility Dogs Inc is affiliated with Dogs Victoria.

We aim to promote the sport of Dog Agility through positive training techniques and to encourage our members to be physically active by involving their dogs in this fun sport. We also encourage responsible pet ownership through furthering the partnership between owner and dog.

What is Dog Agility?

Dog Agility competitions are similar to show jumping competitions for horses.

In this exciting sport, dogs race through tunnels, leap over jumps, blast through weave poles and are timed on their run through a series of obstacles known as a course. Faults are accumulated for any inaccuracies made on the way.

Connect between dog and handler by using positive reinforcement

Positive training uses rewards for learning, focusing on what motivates your dog, like food, toys, or praise. Reward your dog every time they perform the correct behavior. This approach works because animals repeat rewarding actions and avoid unrewarded ones.

Positive Training

Our mission is to promote positive reward based training (in the context of agility) with a view to providing members with the skills they need to participate in ANKC agility trials. Of course you do not have to intend to trial to join classes but our training philosophy and class content will support those who do.
THIS IS IMPORTANT - Bulla Agility Dogs Inc MAY NOT BE THE CLUB FOR YOU:
- If you just want to ‘have fun and run your dog over some equipment’ then our classes may not be for you.
- If you do not want to use food and toys as reinforcement for your dog, then our classes may not be for you either.
Your dog will be required to be off-lead to perform certain tasks during training sessions, therefore you must have a reliable recall.

The following skills will be an advantage for to you in Foundation Class:
• Handler focus around distractions
• Basic stay (dog can be in any position)
• No aggression towards other dogs or people
• Has a reward that they love to work for – can be food or toy, ideally both (Please bring food/toys along on the night)
• Play behaviours – tug is an advantage, but not necessary
• Experience with teaching through shaping or willing to learn to teach through shaping
• Extra advantage : You have taught your dog a ‘trick’
• Dog at an appropriate weight for safe agility training
